Where Will Justin Verlander End Up in 2023?

The best pitcher in baseball is on the loose and the best teams are fighting for him.

At 40 years old, Justin Verlander continues to be one of the most dominant pitchers in all of baseball, and that is why he will soon receive his third Cy Young Award.

In fact, the Astros right-hander is coming off one of the best seasons of his career after posting an 18-4 record with a 1.75 ERA and 185 strikeouts in 175 innings pitched. All this after missing the entire 2021 season following elbow surgery.

Last week it was announced that Justin Verlander opted out of his player option for 2023, so from now on he is officially a free agent. Many of the major baseball teams will at least try to approach the pitching ace in order to acquire his services.

That said, it is known that Justin Verlander would be seeking a deal similar to Max Scherzer's three-year, $130 million contract. The big question is: who will get Verlander in 2023?

New York Yankees

Reporter Bryan Hoch claimed that the Yankees offered Verlander a contract for the 2021 season, although the pitcher ultimately decided to return to Houston.

Verlander's current situation is most appealing to the Yankees, who historically manage to sign the best pitchers of all time at some point in their careers. Names like Randy Johnson, Roger Clemens, and C.C. Sabathia, who all wore pinstripes after shining for other teams, come to mind.

If the Yankees want to contend in October, they should take a chance on an established arm like Justin Verlander, although they will have to offer him a large amount of money for that to happen.

Los Angeles Dodgers

Now that Tyler Anderson has agreed to a three-year deal with the Angels, the Dodgers need to add another ace to their rotation, and who better than Justin Verlander to fill the vacancy?

We must also consider that Clayton Kershaw is looking for a team in free agency and that Walker Buehler underwent Tommy John surgery in August. The Dodgers need to bolster their starting pitching staff, and Verlander may be the ideal piece, although it won't be easy to meet his demands.

The Dodgers have the financial power to offer Verlander an expensive deal, and it would always be attractive to play for a team that won 111 regular-season games in 2022. No doubt, the addition of Verlander would make the Dodgers even more of a contender to win in 2023.

New York Mets

The Mets are desperate to get an ace for their rotation after Jacob deGrom and Chris Bassitt decided to pursue a new multi-million-dollar contract in free agency. Reports indicate that the Mets will do everything they can to sign Verlander.

According to multiple reports, the Mets would be willing to offer Verlander up to $40 million per season over three campaigns. Max Scherzer received a similar three-year, $130 million contract with the Mets.

Honestly, envisioning a rotation with Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, and Carlos Carrasco would be phenomenal, and at the end of the day, the Mets must fill a big hole left by deGrom, one of the best pitchers in the game today.
