These MLB Teams Are En Fuego

Who needs power rankings? These teams may not be in first, but they're hot.

Power rankings are great, but they also hold onto context from the previous rest of the season. That means that the teams in 1st place will always wind up near the top. The bad teams who might have a good two weeks stretch may move up the list, but you won't get their hot streak into the current context. Let's take a look at some teams (first place or not) who are hot.

New York Yankees

This one is the most obvious on the list. They're in first place now by 11 games and have a 49-17 record. The Yankees have the best run differential in MLB with a +143. They have the best OPS in MLB with a .772, are 2nd in runs, 1st in home runs, and 2nd in OPB. Pitching? Do you want pitching? The Yankees lead MLB in ERA, 1st in WHIP, and have given up the fewest amount of runs. They are six games better than any other team in the league. "These are cumulative stats! I thought we were talking about hot teams!"

The Yankees are 9-1 in their last 10.

Cleveland Guardians

Do you remember when I said the White Sox were going to run away with the AL Central division, and that no other team would offer much resistance? You don't? Good. Pretend I never did. The White Sox are in third in the AL Central and the Minnesota Twins have led that division for most of the season. Who has climbed into second place? The Cleveland Guardians. The Guardians took two out of three against the mighty Los Angeles Dodgers. They have the sixth-best ERA in MLB and while their offense struggled early on, it has come on as of late.

The Guardians are 8-2 in their last 10.

Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves recently went off on a 13-game win streak. I could end the paragraph there, but ever since coming back to earth they are still winning left and right. Their pitching is good for 7th in MLB in overall ERA and second in strikeouts. They're also second in MLB in home runs and seventh in overall runs scored. It turns out that getting Ronald Acuna Jr. back into your lineup helps score some runs.

The Braves are 8-2 in their last 10.

Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies went on a 9-game win streak of their own at the same time as the Braves won 13 straight. Not long ago, the Phillies' wake was already being held for 2022. The bullpen has been a roller coaster (and that's putting it kindly) and their defense was the stuff of jokes. After firing Joe Girardi, they won nine straight. Talk about adding insult to injury for old Joe. These Phillies can hit. They're fourth in the majors in home runs, third in runs scored, and fourth in slugging.

The Phillies are 7-3 in their last 10.

Last Thoughts

The San Francisco Giants are also 7-3 in their last 10 games but did not quite make this cut. They didn't have a 9-game win streak as the Phillies did. What other teams do you think should have made the list? Let us know on Twitter at @EnFuegoNow or @AJontheguitar.
