It’s missile launch Monday at Chavez Ravine.
Dingers, taters and Schwarber bombs are going to pepper the Los Angeles night sky as the 2022 MLB Home Run Derby rolls into Dodger Stadium.
For the uninitiated, the home run derby is kind of like that extra slice of pizza; it’s unnecessary but always worth it.
Here is the bracket for you to savor, fill out or plan your drinking games accordingly:
Date: Monday, July 18, 2022
Time: 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. Hollywood Time)
Odds via Bovada:
Ronald Acuña Jr.
Completely Arbitrary Picks
Pete Alonso collects derby titles like Pokemon. He won in 2019 and again in 2021, so history tells us that he’s going to festoon the pavilion with baseballs.
Kyle Schwarber already has 29 home runs on the season, feasting on fastballs like the were crab legs at the Vegas buffet.
The kid I’m looking to make some noise tonight, though, is Julio Rodriguez. He might not get a lot of love from the oddsmakers, but the Mariners' phenom has been spectacular since April. He’s amassed 16 home runs since the start of May and has lifted one beleaguered franchise to 51 wins in the first half of the season a game up in the wild card race.
Feeling saucy, I have my picks as Schwarber over Albert Pujols, Juan Soto taking out Jose Ramirez, Rodriguez decimating Corey Seager and Alonso edging out Ronald Acuña Jr.
From there, I think it’s inevitable that we see Schwarber meet and take down the big, bad Pete Alonso.
It’s increasingly clear that 2022 is the Phillies slugger’s season. So I’m not about to bet against him here.
