Jamaica Has A Bobsled Team, Again!

"Feel the Rhythm! Feel the Rhyme! Get on up, it's bobsled time!"

If you're getting tired of Hollywood reboots, so am I. Except, wait, this isn't a reboot, it's for real. It's been 29 years since "Cool Runnings" became a quotable cult classic, Jamaica has a real bobsled team.

Jamaica's four-man bobsled team qualified for the Winter Olympics for the first time in decades and will be competing next month in Beijing. It's the first time the Jamaican bobsled team (four-man) has qualified since 1998.

The inspiring story of a small Caribbean island arriving in the Winter Olympics, playing a sport one would think no Jamaican could have ever heard of, much less played, was the story that inspired the classic movie "Cool Runnings."

You Want To Kiss My Egg?

Team Jamaica was ecstatic to post this on their Instagram.

"BREAKING!!! JAMAICA, WE HAVE A BOBSLED TEAM HEADING TO BEIJING! 📣📣📣 It will be fire on ice as Team Jamaica 🇯🇲 secured their spot at the 2022 Beijing #WinterOlympics. This will be the first time Jamaica will be represented in three Olympic bobsled events: our four-man bobsled, two-man and women’s monobob (new Olympic event). We missed a spot in the two-woman on a tiebreaker but can get in as first alternate if one qualified nation gives up a spot."

Okay. There comes a dangerous line where it's a little insulting or patronizing, and I don't want to walk past that line. Team Jamaica actually managed to qualify for three different bobsled events. Team Jamaica will compete in the two-man event, the four-man event, and the women's monobob event, as well. Monobob is a new event that is a single sledder only, and it's only for women, which is refreshing.

I'm feeling Very Olympic Today!

Let's define bobsled. Not everyone has seen "Cool Runnings" and this story is worth explaining.

"Bobsleigh or bobsled is a team winter sport that involves making timed runs down narrow, twisting, banked, iced tracks in a gravity-powered sleigh."

The next question most people would ask is probably, "does it even snow or get icy in Jamaica?" No. The answer is definitely not. It's a tropical climate where it's hot year-round. The original Jamaican bobsled team couldn't even train on an ice track. They trained on a sled on a concrete track in preparation for those infamous Calgary Games. The Jamaican athletes had not seen a proper bobsled.

For most people, even learning a mild proficiency at something while using the wrong equipment would be an accomplishment of a lifetime. Qualifying for the Olympics, where the best athletes on planet earth compete, is beyond belief. Truly.

Onward and Back

Jamaica's bobsled team became the underdog story that everyone loved. They never technically finished, as they crashed at 85 miles per hour during a turn. Nobody seemed to care, as they were beloved in Calgary regardless. It's worth noting that the women qualified for the Olympics in 2018, as well. This inspiring story is better than just a funny movie.

"Cool Runnings" rules, though. And remember, "Rise and Shine! It's butt-whippin' time!"
