Jenna Ortega's "Wednesday" is coming and the new version of the beloved character looks ready to become a fan-favorite thanks to a spooky trailer that captures just the right Addams vibes. In other words, it’s weird, it’s creepy and it’s fun.
Ortega had big shoes to fill, to begin with. And though comparison is the thief of joy, fans sure seem to like to steal the joy from things, because comparisons to previous versions of Wednesday – and the entire Addams family, were everywhere. But Ortega – and Luis Guzmán, who plays father Gomez Addams, Catherine Zeta-Jones, who plays mother Morticia and Isaac Ordonez, who plays brother Pugsley, stepped right into the iconic Addams family shoes, while still managing to make this their own.
Plus, there’s Gwendoline Christie – our very own Brienne of Tarth from Game of Thrones turned The Sandman’s Lucifer is indeed part of the Wednesday cast and gets more than a few lines in the new trailer. Like we needed any more reasons to be excited about a new take on the Addams family.
But the star of Wednesday is, of course, Ortega. The character, once played by Lisa Loring, and famously by Christina Ricci, is at the center of this adaptation. Yes, the Addams family is fun, but this is more about deadpan, protective and frankly weird Wednesday and how she navigates life while still remaining very much the character that became iconic for her unwillingness to compromise who she is for anyone else.
Just as it should be.
The show, which has no set release date yet, is expected sometime in 2022 and will consist of eight episodes.
