"God of War: Ragnarok" is a video game being released on November 9th. The Santa Monica Studio game is the 9th installment in the "God of War" series. The advertisement that is making rounds on social media is brilliant. The ad stars LeBron James and his son Bronny. It also stars John Travolta, his daughter Ella, and Ben Stiller with his son Quinn.
If you just watched it, here is the question: what does this commercial have to do with "God of War?" If you're trying in vain to string together a faint connection—you are not alone. That is why this ad is brilliant. The ad is loosely about Stiller (dressed as Kratos) feeling "more himself" in costume and it helping to make breakthroughs (Lebreakthroughs) in his relationship with his son. This also applies to LeBron and Bronny. The connection to the game is there, though, especially if you have played the games.
Father and Child
It's no Spielberg-Esque father/son trope, but God of War's father/son dynamic between Kratos and Atreus is impressive, and not just for a video game. Travolta is one of the biggest actors of his generation, but James and Bronny also do a good job portraying a snarky relationship between father and son. Anyone with kids knows some of this may not be acting. All the kids do an accurate portrayal expressing angst against their parents. If anyone is hoping to where a Kratos outfit to help their relationship with their kids, let me just stop you right there. Just an ad, guys.
Personally, I love the inclusion of Chopin's Nocturne No. 2 in E flat. Sigh. I'm a dad.
